What’s That Noise from My Air Conditioner?

Hearing strange noises from your air conditioner is never a good sign. But what do those noises mean? Different sounds coming from your AC can signify different problems, here’s what you should do based on what you hear!

Chirping noises: usually indicate that the bearings are dry, the fan is rubbing against the coils or blower cage, or the belt needs to be replaced. Chirping is the least serious air conditioner noise, so if you hear it, let your system run and see if it quiets down or if the noises become less frequent. If the noise gets louder or turns into more of a squeal, turn off your unit and call Champion & Nash, you may have a bigger issue.

Squealing noises: indicate the same problems as chirping noises, but typically to a much more severe degree. They often signal that the fan is getting ready to burn out. It’s important to correct the issue before it causes your whole system to break down.

Growling noises are not a good sign — they often mean your compressor is dying. Turn it off and call a professional, to determine if it can be fixed or if you’ll need a replacement.

Rattling noises can be caused by several things, including: a loose fan or worn-out motor, or a fan that’s off-balance, usually caused by a bent fan blade. It could also indicate a loose belt panel or a panel that hasn’t been properly replaced. It could just be a symptom of old age. A little rattling is usually OK, but if it gets louder or sounds like something is really off, call a professional.

Knocking noises like rattling can signify a few things wrong with your system. The most common include a broken or worn-out compressor, improper refrigerant pressures, a stuck valve somewhere in your refrigerant system, or a loose compressor.
